How this guide works
For an open room, add the room length and width in metres, then multiply by 10 to get a fitting diameter in centimetres. The result is a starting range, not a rule: the visual weight of the fitting and your room’s furniture matter.
How high should a chandelier hang above a dining table?
Start with the bottom of the fitting around 75–90 cm above the tabletop. Check it while seated: it should light the table without cutting across sightlines. Taller ceilings and deeper shades may need a small adjustment.
What if my ceiling is low?
For a fitting in a walkway, preserve at least 210 cm of clearance below it. If the calculator identifies limited drop room, choose a flush, semi-flush or short-drop fitting rather than forcing a chandelier into the space.
How many pendants should I use over a kitchen island?
Keep the grouping within roughly two-thirds of the island length. One well-scaled fitting can suit a compact island; two often suit a medium island; three are a starting point only for longer islands. Balance matters more than maximum quantity.
Will one chandelier light the whole room?
Usually, no. A central fitting provides a focal point and ambient light, but reading, cooking and evening relaxation benefit from layered lighting at different heights. Use dimming where compatible.
Before choosing a fitting
Check the product’s full dimensions and weight, the ceiling structure, bulb output and dimming compatibility. A visually heavy crystal fitting may suit the lower end of the size range.
